Two shadows of a net and paddle overlapping on a table, suggesting a paired doubles team

Set up a doubles night

4 min read

Doubles is one of the four format cards in the setup wizard. Everything works like a Classic Groups night, except the roster step registers fixed 2-player teams instead of individual players.

If you're wondering how to run a doubles table tennis tournament with a club night results tracking app, this guide covers only what's different about Doubles — for the shared parts (group setup, seeding, the finals toggle), see the club night setup guide.

Step 1 — Pick Doubles

On the wizard's Step 1 splash screen, tap the Doubles card. This takes you to a roster step titled "Register Teams" instead of "Add Players."

Step 2 — Register teams

There are two ways to build your team list.

  • Add one team at a time: the inline form shows a Team Title field, then a Player 1 row (Name · Surname · Rank · Rating) and a Player 2 row with the same fields. Fill both players and save — the form re-opens for the next team. Each saved team appears as a card: Team Title row, Player 1 compact card, Player 2 compact card, in a single-column list, not the 2-column grid singles uses.
  • Paste a roster and auto-pair: tap Paste roster, paste a list of names, one per line, then tap Auto-pair all. The app pairs everyone into random teams in one go — the hint text reads exactly "Paste a roster and pair everyone into random teams in one go — adjust any pairing after." If your list has an odd number of names, one player is left unpaired for you to place manually. After auto-pairing you can still edit any individual pairing before continuing — nothing is locked until you start the tournament.

Step 3 onward — same as a normal club night

Once teams are registered, Doubles continues through the same steps as Classic Groups: Match Format (Tables / Groups / Consolation / Finals set counts), the Variation selector, Groups (Auto/Custom, seeding method), and the Finals YES/NO toggle — all identical to the singles flow.

Scoring a doubles match

Doubles matches are scored exactly like singles matches: best-of-sets, +/- buttons per team, and the same Correct Result flow for fixing a mistake after the fact. Nothing about score entry changes for a team versus an individual player.

Honest limits

Free plan does not include Doubles. It is part of the "standard" format band that starts on the Club plan.

A club's saved player directory, used elsewhere for quick-add typeahead, lists individual people, not doubles pairs — it does not remember which two people you paired together on a previous doubles night. Every doubles night's pairing is a fresh decision, whether you build teams by hand or auto-pair.

Team pairings, once the tournament starts, follow the same locking rules as any other format-level setting — you cannot re-pair a team mid-event without reverting the matches that used the old pairing.

Common questions

How do I run a doubles table tennis tournament?

Pick the Doubles card on the wizard's Step 1 screen, then register fixed 2-player teams either one at a time or by pasting a roster and using Auto-pair all. From there the setup matches Classic Groups exactly.

Can I auto-pair a doubles roster?

Yes. Paste a list of names, one per line, then tap Auto-pair all — the app randomly pairs everyone into teams. You can still edit any pairing afterward, and an odd number of names leaves one player for you to place manually.

Is doubles scoring different from singles?

No. Doubles matches use the same best-of-sets scoring, +/- buttons, and Correct Result flow as singles — only the roster step (teams instead of individuals) is different.

Does the player directory remember my doubles pairings?

No. The saved player directory lists individual people for quick-add, not team pairings — every doubles night starts pairing fresh.

Is Doubles available on the Free plan?

No. Doubles requires the Club plan or above; it is not included on Free.
